FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions
What is an automatic watch winder?
An automatic watch winder is a motorized device that keeps your automatic (self-winding) watch running when you are not wearing it. It mimics the natural motion of a wrist by rotating the watch at precise intervals, keeping the mainspring wound and the movement lubricated — so your watch is always set, always ready, and mechanically healthy.
Do I really need a watch winder?
If you own more than one automatic watch and rotate between them, a winder eliminates the daily friction of manual winding and resetting the time, date, and complications every morning. It also keeps the lubricating oils circulating inside the movement, which can extend the interval between costly service appointments. For watches with complex complications — moon phase, annual calendar, perpetual calendar — a winder is essentially mandatory.
Can a watch winder damage my watch?
A quality winder set to the correct TPD (Turns Per Day) for your specific watch brand is completely safe. The risk comes exclusively from low-quality winders with unknown or unconfigurable TPD, excessive rotation speeds, or strong electromagnetic fields. Miron Atelier winders display their TPD settings clearly and are designed within safe operational ranges for all major brands. Please review our TPD Guide tab to set the correct parameters for your watch.
Is there a danger of over-winding with a watch winder?
No. All modern automatic watches include a slipping clutch mechanism that prevents over-winding — once the mainspring is fully wound, it simply slips. However, running a winder at excessive TPD puts unnecessary stress on the clutch and rotor over time. Setting your winder to the correct TPD for your watch (see our TPD Guide) eliminates this concern entirely.
Which rotation direction should I use?
It depends on your movement. Most modern automatic movements wind in both directions (bi-directional). Some older movements wind clockwise only (notably Panerai). Miron Atelier winders are programmable with CW, CCW, and bi-directional modes. Refer to our TPD Guide for direction recommendations by brand.
Is my Rolex / Omega / Breitling compatible?
Yes. Miron Atelier watch winders are compatible with automatic watches from all major brands including Rolex, Omega, Breitling, Tudor, IWC, Tag Heuer, Tissot, Seiko, Longines, Hamilton, Patek Philippe, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Panerai, and more. See the TPD Guide tab for brand-specific settings.
Does the watch winder include a watch?
No. Miron Atelier watch winders are sold as standalone units only. No watch is included.
What is TPD (Turns Per Day)?
TPD stands for Turns Per Day — the number of complete rotations your watch winder performs in 24 hours. Each automatic watch movement requires a specific number of daily rotations to remain fully wound. Setting the correct TPD is essential: too low and your watch may stop; too high puts unnecessary stress on the rotor. Most automatic watches require between 500 and 900 TPD.

My authorized dealer told me not to use a winder. Is that correct?
This is a widely debated topic. The concern raised by some ADs almost always relates to low-quality winders with uncontrolled or incorrectly set TPD — not to quality winders properly configured for your movement. A correctly programmed winder replicates natural wrist motion and is accepted as safe by independent watchmakers and the serious collector community. The critical variable is using a winder with a transparent, configurable TPD — which is precisely the standard Miron Atelier is built to.
How do I program the TPD on my Miron Atelier winder?
Each Miron Atelier winder includes a user manual with step-by-step programming instructions. Generally: press and hold the settings button to enter programming mode, use +/- to select TPD, then select rotation direction (CW / CCW / Bi-directional). Confirm and exit. Your settings are saved even after unplugging. For assistance, contact support@miron-atelier.com.
